Indian BPOs continue copy editing service for world media, over 15,000 journalists lost job
January 6th, 2009Recently I read a blog by Rob Bon , a PR person and blogger . His blog http://pr-media-blog.co.uk has described post on how editing and news writing is being outsourced from India by mainline international press. He has quoted a blog and shared startling information that these outsourcing efforts have forced over 15000 US journalists to loose their job.
I was very much curious to know more about the issues. As I started to gather information, I found the pin is pointed to India. Many in India have turned BPO to offer them editorial services. The news a citizen in a London daily reads is re-written/ edited by a faceless BPO writer in India. Few websites even have been outsourcing content writing solutions from India. They send the press release, reporter’s copy to their Indian BPO for editing on daily basis.
The remuneration is - they pay $7.50 (£5) per 1000 words. As newspapers in the US cut costs in a bid to face the slowdown, the concern is that the traditional media may see a benefit in adopting the same outsourcing model. The PRmedia blog has expressed concern. It has questioned that “if the journalists are ‘offshored’ you would lose the knowledge of, and empathy with, the readership. If that happens the essence of why a reader buys a particular newspaper is lost. “
The newspaper in abroad will change the strategy and may opt for BPO based editing easily. But it has far effect on world media and readership.
ays will decide in which direction it will go.
